The match was ultimately decided by penalties, where Kairat Almaty triumphed 3-2 thanks to the heroics of their goalkeeper, Anarbekov. This victory made them only the second Kazakh club, after Astana, to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

The 21-year-old shot-stopper Anarbekov emerged as the hero of the night. He saved Idah’s penalty in the first round, denied McCann in the second, and once again blocked Daizen Maeda’s decisive shot in the fifth round to secure his team’s historic win.
