Messi Dismantles Algeria in Historic Group J Opener
Argentina arrived at Arrowhead Stadium as the defending champions and the strongest side on paper by a considerable margin, and they wasted no time asserting that superiority.
Messi broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with a long-range left-footed effort that gave Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane no chance, and the Albiceleste held that advantage at the break.
The contest was settled in a 16-minute second-half burst. At the hour mark, Alexis Mac Allister’s shot was saved, and Messi was first to the rebound to tap in his second. He completed the hat-trick in the 76th minute with a curled effort into the bottom corner , his 13th direct contribution at a World Cup. Algeria created little of note throughout and head coach Vladimir Petkovic had no answers.
The match was also a milestone occasion: Messi made his record sixth World Cup appearance and earned his 200th cap for Argentina. The three goals moved him to 16 in World Cup football, drawing level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose for the all-time record.

Messi’s Three Moments That Decided the Match
The opener arrived in the 17th minute when Messi turned on the ball and drove a left-footed strike from range past Luca Zidane, a composed, decisive finish. The second goal, on 60 minutes, came from Messi following up a Mac Allister shot that was parried, tapping in with his right foot.
The third, in the 76th minute, was a curled left-footed finish into the bottom corner, sealing the hat-trick and a straightforward three points. No cards were issued in the match.

Messi Rewrites Records at His Final World Cup
Lionel Messi was, unambiguously, the story of this match and the day’s standout performer across the entire tournament. His first goal dispelled any lingering concerns about the hamstring problem he had carried in the weeks before the tournament; his movement, touch, and finishing were sharp throughout.
The hat-trick was his first at a World Cup in six attempts spanning 20 years, and it came on his 200th international appearance, a milestone cap that he marked in the most fitting way possible.
The three goals drew him level with Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record of 16, a mark that now looks vulnerable with two group games still to play.

Group J Picture and What Comes Next for Both Sides
Argentina move to the top of Group J with three points and a three-goal advantage in goal difference. Their next fixture is against Austria in Dallas on 22 June, a match that now carries less pressure given the commanding opener. A positive result there would effectively seal qualification to the round of 32 well ahead of the final group date against Jordan on 27 June.
For Algeria, the defeat leaves them needing results from their remaining two games, against Jordan and then Austria, simply to stay in contention for one of the eight best third-place spots. Petkovic’s side showed little going forward and will need to improve their attacking output significantly to remain in the tournament.
Argentina face Austria in Dallas on 22 June; Algeria must bounce back against Jordan on the same date to keep their round-of-32 hopes alive.
