Norway eliminated five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16 on July 6 at MetLife Stadium, with Erling Haaland scoring twice in the final 11 minutes to send Stale Solbakken’s side into the quarter-finals for the first time in their history. Brazil, managed by Carlo Ancelotti crashed out in the last 16, with Neymar’s stoppage-time penalty proving only a consolation.

Haaland Rescues Norway After Brazil Miss Penalty
Bruno Guimaraes gave Brazil the lead from the penalty spot in the 14th minute, but goalkeeper Orjan Nyland had already denied him once in an early spot-kick, and Norway grew into the contest without registering a goal. Patrick Berg had a third-minute effort disallowed for offside, hinting at the threat Norway would eventually deliver.
The second half was largely even, with Brazil substitute Endrick wasting a one-on-one and Rayan’s drive turned away by Nyland. Ancelotti turned to Neymar from the bench in search of a second goal, but it was Norway who remained dangerous, substitute Andreas Schjelderup was denied by Alisson at the near post.
With 11 minutes remaining, Haaland broke the deadlock with a header to level the match, then added a low drive from range in the 90th minute to put Norway ahead. Neymar converted a penalty deep into stoppage time, but the final whistle confirmed Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990.

Nyland’s Save and Haaland’s Late Double Decide It
Nyland’s save from Guimaraes’ 14th-minute penalty proved critical, had Brazil converted, the match’s momentum might never have shifted. Haaland headed Norway level in the 79th minute, getting in front of his marker to beat Alisson, before a long-range low drive in the 90th minute settled the tie.
Neymar’s stoppage-time penalty awarded after a foul on Casemiro, reduced the deficit but could not prevent elimination. Neymar was also booked in the 90th minute for a foul on Odegaard.

Haaland: Seven Goals and a Historic Night for Norway
Erling Haaland was the defining figure of the match, taking his tournament tally to seven goals and tying for the lead in the Golden Boot race.
He had been largely kept quiet before his 79th-minute header, but his ability to make decisive runs and his composure on the long-range drive that sealed the win, underlined why Norway built their entire World Cup campaign around him. It marks a milestone for Haaland personally: he now has answered every question about performing at international knockout level.

Norway Eye Quarters; Brazil Begin Post-Mortem
Norway now advance to the quarter-finals, their first appearance at that stage and will face the winner of England vs Mexico. Haaland’s form at seven goals in the tournament means any opponent faces a considerable threat, and Solbakken’s side have shown they can absorb pressure and punish on the counter-attack at the highest level.
For Brazil, the exit is their earliest from a World Cup since 1990, a painful outcome for Ancelotti’s squad that was considered among the pre-tournament favourites. The timing of Neymar’s yellow card for fouling Odegaard, after already converting a penalty, will add to post-match scrutiny, though with Brazil eliminated, its disciplinary consequence is moot. The federation must now assess the squad’s direction ahead of the next cycle.
Norway’s quarter-final date, against England or Mexico, is set for next Saturday, with Haaland’s seven goals making them a genuine threat to any remaining side.
