Manchester United’s hopes of salvaging their season ended in heartbreak as they lost the most important match of their campaign, the Europa League final. After the defeat, manager Rúben Amorim made a bold and emotional statement, offering to walk away without compensation if the board no longer had faith in him.

“If they want me to step down, I won’t ask for a single cent. If the board believes the club needs a new head coach, I’m ready to resign,” Amorim said, showing his willingness to take full responsibility.

Before the final, United had remained unbeaten across 15 Europa League matches, fueling hopes of European glory. But in the one match they couldn’t afford to lose, they fell short, missing the trophy and a place in next season’s Champions League.

The result confirmed what has been a dismal season for the Red Devils. With just one Premier League game remaining, United sit in 16th place, long out of the title race. They’ve also failed to make a mark in the domestic cups, crashing out of the FA and Carabao Cups.

And now, with the Europa League dream crushed by the Spurs in the final, United will officially be out of all European competitions next season. This is the first time this has happened since the 2014/15 campaign, when they finished seventh in the league.

Bruno Fernandes: “This Has Been a Terrible Season for Manchester United”

Team captain Bruno Fernandes didn’t hold back when reflecting on the season, calling it “awful”  regardless of how the final played out.

“We need to look at ourselves in the mirror and reflect,” said Fernandes. “We must analyse every part of this season, every decision, every moment. Everyone needs to take accountability, starting with me. I need to ask myself what more I can do to help restore the greatness of this club.”

He added that even a win in the final wouldn’t have changed his view of the overall campaign: “It’s been a terrible season. Winning the Europa League might have added some positives, a glimmer of light, but it wouldn’t have masked the fact that we’ve been poor overall.”

Many expect a major squad overhaul during the summer transfer window. If Amorim stays, this could be his first real chance to reshape the team in his image, bringing in players who better suit his system and philosophy.

Whether he remains in charge or not, one thing is clear: Manchester United are at a crossroads. After a season to forget, the coming months could define the club’s future.
