Netherlands crushed Sweden 5-1 in FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F at NRG Stadium, Houston, with Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each scoring twice. The result moves the Dutch to four points and to the top of Group F, while Sweden’s knockout-stage hopes now depend on their final group fixture against Japan.

Brobbey Blitz Sets Tone as Dutch Overrun Sweden
Ronald Koeman named Brian Brobbey as a surprise starter ahead of Crysencio Summerville, who had scored in the opening 2-2 draw with Japan and the decision was vindicated almost immediately. Brobbey struck twice inside 17 minutes, becoming a fixture on the biggest stage with two close-range finishes that put the Netherlands in complete control before the half hour.
Sweden grew into the first half and had a Lagerbielke goal ruled out for offside shortly before the break, but any hope of a comeback was extinguished within ten minutes of the restart.

Cody Gakpo scored twice in the space of seven minutes after the interval, and although Anthony Elanga, introduced from the bench, pulled one back for Graham Potter’s side in the 59th minute, the scoreline was already beyond dispute.
Summerville, himself a substitute, completed a historically striking scoreline in the 89th minute. The 5-1 margin mirrored Sweden’s own opening-group-stage win over Tunisia, and it moved the Netherlands to the top of Group F heading into the final round of matches.
Brobbey’s Brace and Gakpo’s Quick-Fire Double
Brobbey opened the scoring in the 5th minute, with Gakpo’s low cross setting him up for a close-range finish, and he repeated the feat in the 17th minute when a Dumfries cross again found him in front of goal.
Gakpo then delivered the decisive blow in the second half, scoring in both the 47th and 54th minutes to end any realistic contest. Elanga’s 59th-minute goal for Sweden, their only reward on the night, briefly made the scoreline more presentable, but Summerville’s 89th-minute strike ensured the margin reflected Dutch dominance throughout.

Gakpo Rewrites Dutch World Cup Record Books
Cody Gakpo was the standout performer at NRG Stadium. His two second-half goals, scored inside seven minutes of each other, moved him level with Robin van Persie as the Netherlands player with the most World Cup group-stage goals, reaching five.
It was also only the second time two Dutch players had each scored twice in the same World Cup match, the first being Van Persie and Arjen Robben in the famous 5-1 defeat of Spain at the 2014 tournament. While Brobbey’s early double set the platform, Gakpo’s contribution at a critical juncture of the match settled the contest beyond doubt.
Dutch Top Group F; Sweden Must Beat Japan
The victory gives the Netherlands control of their own qualification. With four points from two games and a superior goal difference, Koeman’s side need only avoid a heavy defeat against Tunisia in the final group match to advance to the round of 32. The result has effectively turned their last game into a formality barring a dramatic collapse.

For Sweden, the situation is more precarious. Their goal difference, built on the 5-1 win over Tunisia in Matchday 1, has been completely erased, and Graham Potter’s squad now face Japan in a match they must win to advance.
All three Sweden bookings on the day (Gudmundsson 53′, Ayari 75′, Bergvall 80′) add a discipline concern heading into that decisive fixture, with any further cautions potentially triggering suspensions at the worst possible moment.
Netherlands face Tunisia in their Group F finale knowing a point almost certainly books their place in the round of 32; Sweden must beat Japan or go home.
