Ivory Coast opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Philadelphia on June 14. Amad Diallo’s composed late finish, set up by Wilfried Singo’s run down the right, ended Ecuador’s 19-game unbeaten streak and handed Emerse Faé’s side three points from the most dramatic of endings.

Ecuador Hit the Woodwork Three Times, Diallo Has the Last Word
Ecuador, the stronger side on paper going into Group E’s second fixture, controlled the opening period and came agonisingly close to taking the lead.
John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar inside the opening half-hour, while Enner Valencia added a third woodwork strike early in the second half, yet the scoreboard remained blank.
Ivory Coast grew into the match as the hour mark passed. Yan Diomande caused problems in midfield, and coach Emerse Faé’s tactical adjustments, including bringing Amad Diallo on for Bazoumana Touré ten minutes into the second half, gradually shifted the contest.
The decisive moment arrived in the 90th minute. Wilfried Singo surged down the right and cut the ball back for Diallo, who sidefooted a clean finish past Hernán Gálindez. It was Ivory Coast’s first World Cup victory since 2014 and ended a 19-game unbeaten sequence for Ecuador at the worst possible moment.

Three Woodwork Hits, One Clinical Finish Settle the Game
Ecuador’s first-half dominance yielded nothing despite Yeboah and Minda hitting the crossbar in the opening 30 minutes. Valencia’s second-half effort off the woodwork underlined Ecuador’s misfortune but also their failure to force saves when the chances mattered.
Singo’s lung-busting run on 90 minutes created the opening Diallo needed, and his composed first-time finish settled a match Ecuador felt they deserved to be winning.

Diomande Drives Ivory Coast, Diallo Delivers the Blow
Yan Diomande was named the top-rated player on the pitch, consistently pressing and carrying in the middle of the park as Ivory Coast gradually wrested control from Ecuador. The assist and the finish, however, belonged to the substitute combination of Singo and Amad Diallo.
Diallo, a surprise starter omission, responded emphatically off the bench, producing the clinical moment his side needed when Group E’s opening game looked destined for a goalless draw.
Yellow Card Buildup and Group Table Shape Ivory Coast’s Path Ahead
Ivory Coast collected three yellow cards in a 12-minute spell, Sidy Fofana (28′), Franck Kessié (38′), and Gervais Doué (40′), while Ecuador’s Jackson Porozo was booked at 73′. None resulted in dismissals, but Kessié and Doué in particular carry a card into Ivory Coast’s next fixture. One more booking for either player would mean suspension.

The result places Ivory Coast level on three points with Germany at the top of Group E, while Ecuador and Curaçao are on zero. Ivory Coast face Germany next, a far sterner test given Germany put seven past Curaçao in their opener. Ecuador must regroup quickly; they cannot afford another dropped result if they are to challenge for a place in the round of 32.
Ivory Coast’s discipline and squad depth will both be tested against Germany; Ecuador need a result in their next fixture or qualification becomes a steep climb.
