The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers across North and Central America and the Caribbean have delivered a series of unexpected outcomes.

In a remarkable turn of events, Haiti, Panama, and Curaçao all topped their respective groups, securing direct qualification to the World Cup.

Among them, the most striking story is undoubtedly Curaçao. With a population of just 160,000, the island nation earned its first-ever World Cup qualification, setting a historic record as the smallest country by population to reach the tournament. Their journey adds a new chapter to the 2026 World Cup as a football legend.

Haiti Returns to the World Cup After 52 Years

Due to ongoing domestic instability, the Haitian national team was forced to relocate its home matches to Curaçao.

Despite facing immense challenges, Haiti delivered a gritty performance in Willemstad, defeating Nicaragua 2–0 to secure the top spot in Group C. This marks their return to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, ending a 52-year absence from the global stage.

Haiti’s qualification was further aided by a goalless draw between Honduras and Costa Rica, a result that allowed “Les Grenadiers” to achieve a historic breakthrough amid difficult circumstances.

In the face of political turmoil and logistical struggles, the team displayed tremendous belief and resilience, giving their nation a moment of long-awaited pride.

Panama Dominates at Home to Claim Group A

In Group A, Panama demonstrated the consistency and composure of a team accustomed to high-stakes competition.

Playing at home, they defeated El Salvador 3–0, confidently securing first place in the group. This achievement sends them back to the World Cup for the second time, following their debut at Russia 2018.

The team, led by former Leeds United manager Thomas Christiansen, features a seasoned lineup including Marseille defender Murillo, Santiago midfielder Godoy, and Nacional goalkeeper Mejía.

Their experience and tactical discipline were key to Panama’s vigorous campaign, reaffirming their status as a competitive force within the region.

A Country of Only 160,000 Makes History

The most talked-about story of the CONCACAF qualifiers is undoubtedly Curaçao’s extraordinary journey. In their decisive match against Jamaica, Curaçao held on for a crucial 0–0 draw.

The result allowed them to finish one point above their opponents and claim the top spot in Group B, securing their first-ever World Cup qualification.

Adding to the drama, Dutch head coach Dick Advocaat returned to the Netherlands due to family matters just before the final fixtures, leaving the team to complete their historic push without a manager on the sidelines.

Even so, the Curaçao squad showed immense composure under pressure, pushing their nation into football history.

Among the squad, the most eye-catching figure is Sheffield United midfielder Dai-Chen (Tahith Chong), who has Chinese heritage. A product of Manchester United’s academy and a former Netherlands youth international, he missed the final match due to injury.

However, his debut for Curaçao earlier this year symbolised a turning point for the team. His involvement in this campaign is widely regarded as one of the key components behind the nation’s most outstanding football achievement.
