Cristiano Ronaldo No Longer Guaranteed to Start? Roberto Martinez Addresses Portugal Captain’s World Cup Role

Ronaldo might not be the starting role

Ronaldo is once again in the spotlight as the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins on June 11 in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The largest World Cup ever will feature 48 teams and 104 matches, with Mexico City hosting the first game.

This may be Ronaldo’s last chance to win the World Cup.

The Portuguese forward brings confidence into the tournament after helping Al-Nassr win the Saudi Pro League. As Al-Nassr won the championship, Ronaldo scored twice in a 4-1 win over Damac, ending his Saudi Arabian title drought.

Even after another successful season, Portugal’s biggest concern remains: will Ronaldo still start at 41?

Martinez Refuses to Guarantee Ronaldo a Starting Role

Martinez declined to say whether Ronaldo would start every World Cup game for Portugal.

The Portugal coach stated that no player’s minutes will be predetermined. Match-by-match decisions will be based on fitness, tactical considerations, and tournament demands.

“We do not set fixed playing time for players,” Martinez stated. After each match, we assess and prepare for the next. Tournament football changes quickly; we can’t decide anything before the competition.”

His statement quickly ignited debate among fans and pundits. Ronaldo is Portugal’s captain and one of football’s most famous players, but Martinez’s statements suggest his notoriety won’t determine his role.

Martinez recently stated that Portugal manages Ronaldo based on his national team accomplishments rather than his iconic reputation.

Ronaldo Still Scores, But the World Cup Is a Different Test

Ronaldo might not be the starting role

Ronaldo’s finishing is unquestionable. He is still deadly inside the box, merciless from set pieces, and can win matches with one shot at 41.

His recent form at Al-Nassr shows he can still score. World Cup pressure and intensity are different.

Portugal will confront tight timelines, high-tempo opponents, and knockout-stage margins where every tactic counts. Ronaldo’s ability to play at full throttle throughout numerous matches is certainly in question at this stage of his career.

This does not diminish his worth. Portugal may need to employ him more wisely.

A 90-minute role in every game may no longer be wise. Portugal might maximize their captain’s performance by starting some matches, resting others, or coming off the bench as a late-game weapon.

Would Ronaldo Accept Being a Substitute?

The most sensitive part of the debate is not whether Ronaldo can still contribute. It is whether he would accept a reduced role if Martinez decides that is best for the team.

Martinez does not appear worried.

When asked if Ronaldo would accept being used as a substitute, the Portugal coach gave a firm answer.

“He would accept it. He would accept it,” Martinez said. “The World Cup schedule is very demanding, and rotation is necessary. Cristiano always leads by example. He is a model captain.”

Martinez also praised Ronaldo’s influence beyond goals, citing his experience, mentality, and leadership within the squad.

Ronaldo’s Final World Cup Dream Remains Alive

Ronaldo might not be the starting role

Ronaldo has won practically everything in football: the Champions League, the European Championship, the Nations League, the Ballon d’Or, and numerous scoring records.

The World Cup is still missing.

A sixth World Cup appearance at 41 would be extraordinary. Ronaldo will dominate Portugal’s campaign whether he starts every match, rotates, or plays as a late-game weapon.

Martinez argues that Portugal will not make emotional decisions. The team comes first.

Ronaldo may have to play a new role in his final World Cup. It may be Portugal’s only chance to realize one last dream.
