Barcelona Come From Behind to Beat Real Sociedad 2-1 and Climb to the Top of La Liga

La Liga giants Barcelona claimed a 2-1 comeback victory over Real Sociedad in Round 7 of the league, overtaking arch-rivals Real Madrid to move to the top of the standings.

In Monday’s La Liga clash, Real Sociedad took the lead through Álvaro Odriozola. However, the home side Barcelona struck back with goals from Jules Koundé and Robert Lewandowski to complete the turnaround. In the end, Barça sealed a 2-1 win and secured all three points.

With this result, Barcelona have now recorded six wins and one draw, amassing 19 points, one point ahead of Real Madrid at the summit. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad suffered their fourth defeat of the season and currently sit 17th in the table.

Odriozola Scores, Koundé Levels It Up

In the 31st minute, Real Sociedad broke the deadlock as Barrenechea advanced down the left and delivered a cross, which Odriozola followed up on with a simple finish to put the visitors 1-0 ahead.

Barcelona quickly responded after conceding. Koundé, who had nearly scored an own goal earlier, redeemed himself in the 43rd minute by rising high to head in Marcus Rashford’s corner from the left, drawing the home side level at 1-1 before halftime.

Lewandowski’s Header Secures the Comeback, Kubo Hits the Crossbar

After the restart, substitute Lamine Yamal produced a clever assist, setting up Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who headed home from close range in the 59th minute to give Barça a 2-1 lead.

Both sides continued to push forward. In the 74th minute, Yamal found the net, but his effort was ruled out for offside. 

Nine minutes later, in the 83rd, Takefusa Kubo came agonizingly close for Real Sociedad, his shot from the edge of the box crashing against the crossbar. Barcelona ultimately held on for a 2-1 victory.

After the match, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick said, “This was a team victory. The players knew how to compete. It was a tough match, but we deserved the win.”

He added: “Winning feels great, but there’s still a long road ahead… our full focus now shifts to Paris Saint-Germain.”
