Transfer Battle Heats: Man City Closing In On Florian Wirtz as Liverpool Nears Frimpong Deal

According to multiple sources, including Sky Sports, The Daily Mail, and The Sun, Manchester City are emerging as frontrunners in the race to sign German midfield sensation Florian Wirtz. Reports suggest that City have agreed verbally with Bayer Leverkusen for the player, with a proposed fee of around €150 million (approx. RM725 million) significantly closer to Leverkusen’s asking price than Bayern Munich’s initial €100 million offer.

Respected German journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that City view Wirtz as a long-term successor to Kevin De Bruyne and are prepared to make a significant investment to secure him. While The Mail claims Wirtz’s parents recently flew to the UK to meet with Manchester City’s top brass, though not yet with Pep Guardiola, The Sun reports that Guardiola has already spoken to the player personally.

While Wirtz has yet to make a final decision, several indicators point to a move to Manchester being more likely than Bayern. For one, City’s offer is more financially attractive to Leverkusen. More importantly, Leverkusen reportedly have no desire to strengthen a direct Bundesliga rival, making a domestic transfer to Bayern less appealing.

Meanwhile, Liverpool is making moves of their own. According to Kicker, the Reds are in advanced talks to sign Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. The 24-year-old has been identified as a key target to fill the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is expected to leave the club this summer.

Frimpong’s current contract runs until 2028 but includes a €40 million (approx. RM193 million) release clause. Liverpool is willing to trigger that clause and is reportedly ready to offer the player a five-year deal through 2030. Negotiations are now focused on personal terms, with the Merseyside club yet to submit a formal bid.

Should both deals go through, it would mark a major talent exodus from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, and another strong statement from Premier League clubs in the transfer market.
