As a core player for Brazil, Neymar’s status remains a major talking point. According to Brazilian media and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Neymar is in Brazil’s preliminary squad for the upcoming friendlies against France and Croatia this month.
The news drew attention since Neymar has not played for Brazil since his serious knee injury in October 2023.
Neymar is not guaranteed a Spot in the Final Squad
Although Neymar is on the preliminary list, his spot in the final squad is not assured. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti is still assessing the fitness of several players. The final squad will be announced next Monday (March 16).

Ancelotti Closely Monitoring Neymar’s Recovery
Reports say Neymar has previously appeared on Ancelotti’s preliminary lists but was not called up. Neymar’s health remains crucial for any return to international play.
According to the Brazilian coaching staff’s schedule, Ancelotti and national team coordinator Rodrigo Caetano traveled together on Tuesday to São Paulo state to watch the Brazilian league match between Santos and Mirassol. The visit was intended to closely observe Neymar’s current form and fitness.
However, Neymar was not included in the match squad due to muscle fatigue, so he did not feature.
Despite Neymar’s absence, the Brazil coaching staff continued with their scouting plans and attended the match as scheduled. This trip is believed to be one of the final in-person evaluations before Brazil’s World Cup squad is announced. Ancelotti hopes to use these observations to thoroughly assess potential candidates.

Several Forwards Under Consideration as No.9 Competition Intensifies
In addition to Neymar, Ancelotti is also evaluating several attacking players. Bournemouth forward Rayan, who has impressed with his recent performances in the English Premier League, has earned a place in the preliminary list.
Meanwhile, Igor Thiago and young striker Endrick are also highly regarded by the Brazil coach. Ancelotti is expected to closely assess these players before deciding on Brazil’s main No.9 option for the upcoming World Cup.
Defensive Adjustments Expected with New Players Considered
Brazil may also make adjustments in defense. With Éder Militão dealing with injury problems and Alexsandro Ribeiro of Lille showing inconsistent form recently, the Brazilian Football Confederation is considering new defensive options.
As a result, Flamengo defender Léo Pereira and Juventus centre-back Bremer have been included in the preliminary squad as potential additions to strengthen the back line.

Brazil to Gather in the United States for Friendly Matches
According to the schedule, the Brazilian national team will assemble in Orlando, United States, on March 23 and will use Florida as their training base during the international break.
On March 26, Brazil will travel to Boston to face France in a high-profile friendly match, then return to face Croatia shortly after. These two matches will provide the coaching staff with important opportunities to assess player performances.
Brazil’s final World Cup squad is expected to be announced on May 19. As the date approaches, every match and every scouting decision could play a crucial role in shaping the final roster.
For Neymar and the other players in the preliminary squad, the coming weeks will be a crucial period to prove their readiness and secure a place in Brazil’s plans for the tournament.
