Leeds United got off to a great start in their return to the Premier League by beating Everton, who finished 13th last season, 1–0 in the penultimate game of the first round. Nmecha scored the game-winning penalty kick late in the game.
Everton Held The Upper Hand On Paper
People thought Everton was the better team since their squad was worth more and was stronger overall. Their team is worth more than €300 million, almost €400 million, while Leeds’ team is worth little over €200 million.
Everton has also been better in their last few matchups, winning three of the previous five. Because of this, most fans thought the Toffees would depart Elland Road with all three points.

No Goals In The First Half
There weren’t many chances in the first half. In the 21st minute, Leeds winger James sent a cross from the side, and Piroe shot at the goal, but the defenders stopped it.
In the 37th minute, Icelandic player Gudmundsson cut inside and tried to shoot, but Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford immediately ran out to clear the ball with his foot. The first half concluded with no goals, at 0–0.

Grealish Subbed On, Deadlock Remains
Both teams continued to struggle to break the tie in the second half. Everton brought on Jack Grealish, who was once worth £100 million, to take Ilory Gbunan’s place in the 71st minute.
Alcaraz shot from a tight angle in the 76th minute, but Leeds keeper Perry was ready and blocked the shot at the near post.

Turning Point: Tarkowski Concedes Penalty, Nmecha Strikes
In the 84th minute, Everton defender James Tarkowski touched the ball in the box, which changed the game. The referee quickly went to the spot, and 26-year-old Nmecha calmly scored the penalty to put Leeds ahead.
With the game-winning goal, freshly promoted Leeds beat Everton at home in a historic game, marking their triumphant return to the Premier League. But for Everton, losing was a bad way to start the new season.

Leeds Dominant In Statistics
Leeds had the ball more than 50% of the time during the game, and they also had more total attempts, shots on target, and corners than Everton. They were more proactive and assertive in general.
Daniel, Gudmundsson, and Japanese international Ao Tanaka were in Leeds’ starting lineup. Gueye, Ndiaye, and Beto were in Everton’s starting lineup. In the end, Leeds’ strong defence and Nmecha’s important goal were enough to beat the visitors.
This win was a big boost for Leeds United’s Premier League season. But for Everton, the setback was a clear reminder that in the most competitive league in the world, having a good reputation and a lot of money isn’t enough to win.
