Liverpool’s Title Hopes Fading? Fowler Analyses Redmen’s Struggles as Man City Emerge as Favourites

UFOOTBALL Robert Fowler

Liverpool’s chances of competing for the Premier League title this season have become increasingly slim.

Club legend Robbie Fowler recently offered an in-depth analysis on a football programme, stating that the Reds are essentially no longer in the title race. However, he stressed that out of professionalism, the players must continue to fight until the very end.

Fowler pointed out that historically, teams that lose six or seven matches in a Premier League season rarely turn things around to win the title. Therefore, if Liverpool hopes to keep their faint title hopes alive, they would need to win every remaining match.

He added that managers will always maintain a positive tone in public to prevent outside negativity from affecting squad morale. Yet he admitted that the team’s current situation is complex, and motivational words alone are not enough to change reality.

Inconsistent Performances Deepen the Crisis

Discussing Liverpool’s fluctuating performances, Fowler noted that although the team beat Aston Villa, their poor first half was worrying. Against Real Madrid, there were glimpses of quality, but such a level has not been sustained in the league, where consistency has been lacking.

Heavy Spending but No Results

Fowler openly criticised Liverpool’s massive transfer outlay in the summer, £446 million, which he believes was the club’s biggest mistake.

Liverpool broke the British transfer record twice in one window, signing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz for £116 million and Newcastle striker Alexander Isak for £125 million.

However, the huge investment has not translated into results. The Reds have lost six of their last seven Premier League matches, with a 0–3 defeat to Manchester City exposing the team’s deeper issues.

New Signings Don’t Fit Slot’s Tactical System

Fowler also argued that many of Liverpool’s summer signings do not suit Arne Slot’s style of play. For example, Jeremie Frimpong, who signed for £29.5 million as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s alternative, is more suited to a wing-back role rather than a traditional full-back.

Meanwhile, £40 million signing Lloyd Kelly is still struggling to handle the pressure that comes with playing for a club of Liverpool’s stature, which has affected his performances.

Fowler admitted that Slot is currently facing a challenging situation, struggling to maximise the potential of the recruits.

After the international break, Liverpool will face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. A win may temporarily ease the pressure on Slot.

Scholes: Manchester City Are the Real Favourites

On the other hand, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Manchester City are the true favourites to win the title this season. He stated that with their extensive experience in winning, City are fully capable of overturning Arsenal’s four-point lead.

Title Race Tilting Toward Man City and Arsenal

Overall, the current momentum suggests the Premier League title race is shifting towards Manchester City and Arsenal.

Liverpool, meanwhile, must confront a harsh reality: their title chances are now extremely slim, and stabilising the season, while stopping the downward spiral, will be their most crucial task moving forward.
