In this round of La Liga, Real Madrid travelled to face Villarreal away from home. Thanks to a brace from Mbappé, Los Blancos secured a 2–0 victory and temporarily moved to the top of the league standings.

Although the match was not particularly entertaining, the result held great significance for Real Madrid in the title race, as three points can matter more than the quality of play.

Slow First Half, Lack of Attacking Fluency

From the opening stages, Real Madrid failed to reach their best rhythm. In the first half, they struggled with ball control and progression, while the connection between midfield and attack was not smooth, leading to occasional breakdowns during transitions.

Vinícius Júnior remained the most threatening attacking outlet on the left flank, using his pace and individual ability to stretch the opposition defence. However, the overall attacking play lacked coherence, making sustained pressure difficult to maintain.

Midfield Issues Leave Space for Counterattacks

Disorganisation in midfield left gaps between defence and attack, giving Villarreal counter opportunities. Pape Gueye nearly scored when his long-range shot brushed the post, testing Real Madrid’s defence.

Mbappé Breaks the Deadlock

After halftime, Real Madrid adjusted and gradually took control. A sharp counterattack was decisive. Vinícius stayed composed on the left and set up Mbappé, who finished confidently for the lead.

The goal eased pressure, and Real Madrid played more composed. Villarreal sought counters, and Moreno had a clear chance but failed to convert. In stoppage time, Mbappé coolly scored a penalty to seal the 2–0 win.

Real Madrid Still Has Room for Improvement

Despite the win, it cannot be ignored that Real Madrid’s overall performance was not flawless. At the back, goalkeeper Courtois had a relatively quiet evening, facing only a limited number of shots and not many opportunities to stand out. However, several teammates showed positive individual performances.

Asensio, not at full fitness, played steadily. Álvaro Carreras made key clearances, boosting the defence. Camavinga struggled early but was more energetic after halftime, stabilising the midfield. Bellingham contributed on both ends, though game control needs work.

The Title Race Continues, Efficiency and Teamwork Are Key

This victory may not have shown Real Madrid at their best, but it provided vital points in the title race and offered valuable lessons for head coach Arbeloa on squad management.

While individual brilliance remains vital to winning matches, improving overall team performance is the next challenge. In La Liga’s competitive environment, teamwork and efficiency are ultimately the keys to success.
