Recently, United States national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino spoke to French outlet L’Équipe about the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. He made it clear that the team’s only objective is to win.

“In the United States, regardless of the sport, the goal is always to win. Football is no exception,” he stated.

The Beauty of Football: A Blend of Logic and Emotion

During the interview, Pochettino also reflected on what makes football such a unique sport. He emphasized that, unlike other competitions heavily driven by data and logic, football cannot be predicted with absolute certainty.

“In football, logic does not always prevail,” he explained. “That is what makes it beautiful, it is unpredictable and sometimes even unfair.”

He added that football goes beyond tactics and technical ability. It involves psychology, emotional control, and team dynamics, making it a complex blend of rational and irrational elements.

Pochettino believes that a strong squad, a positive team mentality, and home support give the USA the potential to achieve something special. He even expressed hopes to replicate historic underdog performances.

Inspired by South Korea and Morocco

Pochettino referenced two teams that made remarkable runs in World Cup history. In the 2002 FIFA World Cup, co-host South Korea reached the semi-finals, achieving their best-ever result. Although their journey sparked some controversy, its historical significance remains undeniable.

Similarly, Morocco emerged as the biggest surprise in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, advancing to the semi-finals and making history for African football.

According to Pochettino, these examples prove that with the right combination of talent, belief, and external support, any team can achieve a breakthrough on the world stage.

On Sensitive Issues: Keeping Politics Out of Football

The interview also touched on current geopolitical tensions, particularly involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which at one point even raised concerns about Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup.

Pochettino addressed the issue with clarity. While he is willing to listen to such questions, he stressed that discussing politics is not part of his role as head coach.

He noted that meaningful impact should come through actions rather than public statements, such as contributing behind the scenes or engaging with those who have the power to drive positive change.

Pochettino also highlighted the importance of professionalism. As a public figure, especially when speaking on U.S. Soccer platforms, he believes it is essential to remain measured and avoid mixing personal views with professional responsibilities.

Focus on the Pitch as USA Eyes a Breakthrough

Pochettino’s remarks reflect his deep commitment to football and a clear sense of professional responsibility. His approach not only underscores his leadership philosophy but also raises expectations for the 2026 tournament.

With the World Cup set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the USA will benefit from home advantage while carrying significant expectations.

Under Pochettino’s guidance, whether the team can match or surpass past underdog achievements remains a compelling storyline.
