120-Minute Battle Decided by Fabinho’s Late Penalty
Al-Ittihad has struggled in this year’s competition, advancing with a 5-win, 3-loss record and a fourth-place West Zone finish. Against strong Al Wahda, the knockout tie was high-intensity from the start.
After 15 minutes, Al-Ittihad nearly scored, but Steven Bergwijn missed from close range. The match then became a midfield struggle, with few clear chances.
In the second half, Al Wahda thought they had taken the lead when Belgian striker Christian Benteke found the net. However, the goal was ruled out due to a foul on the goalkeeper during the build-up. With neither side able to score in regulation, the match went to extra time.
The decisive moment came in the 126th minute. Al-Ittihad were awarded a crucial penalty deep into extra time. Former Liverpool midfielder Fabinho calmly converted the spot-kick, sealing a dramatic last-gasp victory and sending his team into the quarter-finals.
Saudi Clubs Advance as Benzema Faces Awkward Reality
With Al-Ittihad progressing, two of the three Saudi teams in the competition have now reached the quarter-finals. Alongside them, defending champions Al-Ahli also advanced, while Al Hilal suffered a surprising Round of 16 exit.
This outcome puts French star Karim Benzema in an awkward spot. The 38-year-old left Al-Ittihad in the winter window to join Al Hilal, seeking greater success. Ironically, his new club is out, while his former team continues and is now seen as a tournament favorite.
Quarter-Final Fixtures: Johor DT Face Historic Opportunity
With the Round of 16 over, the quarter-final lineup is set. Matches continue in Saudi Arabia through to the final. Notably, Malaysia’s Johor Darul Ta’zim have reached their first-ever quarter-final.
In the first quarter-final, Al Sadd faces Vissel Kobe for a semi-final spot. The winner will play Al-Ahli or Johor Darul Ta’zim, with Johor aiming for an upset.
On the other side, Al-Ittihad meets Machida Zelvia, while Buriram United faces Shabab Al Ahli.
