His stops ranged from sharp reflexes against Valencia early on, to composed aerial parries at set pieces, to the record-breaking 15th save against Angulo with 11 minutes remaining. Room’s display single-handedly kept Curaçao in the match from the opening minutes and earned his small island nation, population roughly 158,000, their first ever World Cup point.

Ecuador in Trouble; Curaçao Still Alive with Final Game

The draw leaves Ecuador in a precarious position in Group E. Having taken only one point from two matches, Beccacece’s side must beat Germany in their final group game to stand any chance of advancing to the knockout rounds, a task made no easier by the accumulation of five yellow cards across the team during this match alone. Any players who picked up a booking here and receive another yellow in the Germany fixture will miss a subsequent game.

For Curaçao, the mathematics are more straightforward: a win against Ivory Coast in Matchday 3 would send them through. The result also rewards Dick Advocaat’s tactical caution, fielding a deep block against Ecuador, and the 75-year-old veteran coach will now prepare his side for a final-group showdown that, improbably, carries genuine qualification stakes.
