Seoul Sports, a South Korean news site, says that Ulsan HD, a K League team, has officially fired Kim Pan-gon, who used to coach the Malaysian national team. Kim had led Malaysia to significant progress in the past, but after returning to South Korea, he was unable to do so again, which led to his firing.
During the first few months of his time in charge, Kim helped Ulsan have some short-term success. But as the season went on, the team kept losing in both the AFC Champions League and the Summer Club World Cup, which meant they failed to achieve their objectives.
Ulsan HD’s top management decided to look for new leaders because the K League team was still not doing well.

Internal Shock Caused by Slumping Form
Ulsan HD has lost points in a few of their last games, which puts their chances of winning the title at risk. The team’s problems on offence and defence have been obvious. In their previous five games, they only scored two goals and gave up several. The team’s morale has significantly decreased.
Ulsan HD hosted Suwon FC on August 2nd for Round 20 of the K League. This would be Kim Pan-gon’s last game. Before the game, the club had already made an official announcement that Kim would leave after the game.

Kim talked about how he felt about leaving Ulsan in an interview before the game. “I thought my time with Ulsan was over yesterday, but being able to say goodbye this way makes me feel very lucky and happy.”
“How many coaches can do so much in just one year? I have achieved titles, experienced memorable moments, faced defeats, and had the honour of coaching the K League All-Star team. It’s been a wonderful trip.”
“I dedicated myself fully to this endeavour, and I have no regrets, regardless of the outcome. I firmly believe that everything occurs for a reason, and I will strive to navigate through it. Additionally, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the fans,” says Kim.

The Turning Point in Kim Pan-gon’s Career
From 2022 to 2024, Kim was praised for being a brilliant leader of the Malaysian national team. He resigned from his position in July of last year, but upon his return to South Korea, everyone held high expectations for him. However, he failed to meet the high expectations held by Ulsan HD’s management and fans.
Reports say that Ulsan HD is getting ready to name Shin Tae-yong, who used to be the head coach of both the South Korean and Indonesian national teams, as Kim’s replacement to stabilize the situation quickly.

People know Shin for using different tactics and for developing young players. He is expected to bring new energy to the team.
Ulsan HD will have to rebuild their team and change their tactics after Kim Pan-Gon’s departure. In the weeks ahead, observers will closely watch whether new head coach Shin Tae-yong can lead the team out of its current slump and restore confidence in the increasingly competitive K League.
