Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has given a candid reflection on Cristiano Ronaldo’s second spell at Old Trafford, admitting it was both a thrilling and frustrating chapter in the club’s recent history.

Speaking on former teammate Rio Ferdinand’s podcast, Maguire described the excitement when Ronaldo returned, but also acknowledged the team’s struggle to adapt tactically to the Portuguese star’s style of play.

The Buzz When Ronaldo Walked In

Maguire recalled the surreal moment Ronaldo first stepped back into United’s dressing room in 2021.

“Having him in the squad was just incredible,” Maguire said. “The moment he walked into the dressing room, it was amazing. The energy, the presence, it lifted everyone instantly.”

But while Ronaldo delivered goals and maintained a high level of performance, Maguire admitted the team never truly clicked around him.

“He kept scoring, his form was great, but we couldn’t produce the performances to match. It was disappointing because the potential was there, yet it never fully came together.”

A Clash of Styles

At the time, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United relied heavily on an aggressive high-pressing system, something Maguire likened to “a pressing machine.” This approach required relentless running and collective intensity from all attackers, but Ronaldo’s game was built around positioning, movement, and clinical finishing rather than constant pressing.

“We might not have been the very best team, but everyone bought into the pressing style and the shape. When Cristiano arrived, we didn’t adjust our tactics enough to suit him. You could see his frustration and disappointment.”

High Hopes That Faded

The summer of 2021 saw United sign not only Ronaldo, but also Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane. Optimism soared, with players and fans alike believing the club could mount a serious Premier League title challenge.

“We thought this was it, the squad to go and win the league. But it never happened. We just didn’t find that chemistry.”

Despite the frustrations of that season, Maguire spoke warmly about Solskjaer’s tenure.

“Those first two years under Ole were the best I’ve felt at United. The tactics were clear, and the coaching staff did a great job.”

Ronaldo’s second stint at Manchester United came to an abrupt end in late 2022, with his contract terminated by mutual agreement following a breakdown in relations. Maguire’s comments now offer a rare behind-the-scenes insight into why one of football’s most high-profile comebacks failed to deliver the fairytale ending so many had imagined.
