The result was part of a perfect opening night for English clubs in the Europa League league phase. Three Premier League sides won their first-round fixtures, adding to the five English clubs who had already won their Champions League openers the previous week.
Juventus top the table after matching City’s scoreline
Juventus also recorded a 5-0 win on the night, beating Nijmegen to lead the Europa League standings after round one. Muani provided an assist, with Woltemade and Gonzalez among the scorers.
Crystal Palace sit second in the table after a 4-0 win over Lech Poznan. Jeremie Pino scored and won a penalty in that match.
Other Europa League round one results
Real Sociedad lost 1-2 at home to Bournemouth, with Kluivert Jr and Rayan scoring for the visitors. Crete beat Hoffenheim 2-0, with Cantarapiedra and Kanellopoulos on the scoresheet.
La Liga clubs had a difficult opening round overall. Seven Spanish sides combined for three wins and four defeats, with Celta and Real Sociedad both losing their opening fixtures.
