The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup officially kicks off this week in the United States, with Premier League giants Chelsea set to take on tournament debutants LAFC in their Group D opener. The Blues are eager to start their campaign with a win and build momentum as they chase a second world title.
This marks Chelsea’s third appearance in the tournament. The London side previously finished runners-up in 2012 and lifted the trophy in 2021. They return this year as champions of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League, hoping to recapture global glory under new manager Enzo Maresca.
Youth Revolution Under Maresca

Chelsea’s squad has undergone a major youth overhaul in recent seasons, and the trend continues. The club recently signed several promising talents born after 2000, including striker Liam Delap (22), midfielder Kobby Eshun Esugo (20), defender Mamadou Sarr (19), and teenage goalkeeper Diego Mendes (19). Maresca, speaking ahead of the match, emphasised the value of youth energy.
“Experience is still important, but today’s game favours energy and dynamism,” Maresca said. “We believe in this young core.”

While Chelsea missed out on securing French goalkeeper Mike Maignan in time for the tournament, Spanish shot-stopper Robert Sánchez is expected to start between the posts. Key figures such as Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernández, Moisés Caicedo, and captain Reece James are all expected to feature in the starting lineup.
LAFC Out to Prove Themselves on Global Stage

Representing MLS and making their Club World Cup debut, LAFC are not to be underestimated. The squad features two 2018 World Cup winners from France, veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and striker Olivier Giroud. The team’s primary attacking threat, however, is Denis Bouanga, who has already notched 11 goals and 5 assists across all competitions this season. Chelsea will be wary of his pace and eye for goal.
Elsewhere in Group D, Brazilian heavyweights Flamengo are expected to breeze past Tunisia’s Hope FC. Coached by former Brazilian international Filipe Luís, Flamengo boast a host of ex-European stars including Jorginho, Danilo, and Alex Sandro.
Meanwhile, in Group C, Portuguese powerhouse Benfica face Argentine giants Boca Juniors in what could be a decisive clash for second place in the group, with Bayern Munich widely favoured to top the table.
As the tournament unfolds, fans can expect an exciting mix of styles, talents, and upsets. For Chelsea, all eyes will be on their youth-powered squad as they look to make a statement on the world stage.
