Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) couldn’t have asked for a better start to their Club World Cup campaign, dismantling Atlético Madrid 4–0 in their Group B opener. With the victory, the newly crowned Champions League winners sent a clear message: they are hungry for more, and a historic fifth trophy this season is firmly in their sights.
Hungry for More: PSG’s Unstoppable Drive

Having already secured four major titles this season, Ligue 1, the Champions League, Coupe de France, and the Trophée des Champions, PSG is chasing an unprecedented quintuple. Head coach Luis Enrique made it clear after the match: “The team is hungry, the fans are hungry, and the players are hungry. That feeling is powerful. Just like every other competition, we’ll give everything to go as far as we can and fight for the trophy.”
PSG took control early on with their trademark passing rhythm and swift transitions. In the 19th minute, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, nicknamed “K77”, slotted a clever cutback to Fabian Ruiz, who fired a stunning long-range strike to give the Parisians the lead.
Just before halftime, PSG struck again. Kvaratskhelia turned provider once more, this time feeding Vitinha, who dribbled into the box and finished calmly to make it 2–0.
Vitinha Pulls the Strings

Vitinha was the heartbeat of PSG’s midfield and deservedly named Man of the Match. He completed 112 of his 114 passes, led the match in long passes (12), and made two key interceptions. His performance underlined PSG’s midfield dominance and tactical discipline.
Atlético Frustrated by VAR and Red Card

Atlético Madrid had their moment in the 60th minute when Julián Álvarez found the back of the net. However, VAR ruled out the goal due to a prior foul by captain Koke, sparking controversy. “That kind of contact is often let go,” Atlético boss Diego Simeone remarked post-match. “But this time, VAR stepped in. The goal changed everything, and then we had to play with 10 men.”
Things went from bad to worse for Atlético when defender Clément Lenglet was shown a second yellow card in the 78th minute for dissent. With the extra man, PSG capitalised and added two more goals.
In the 87th minute, 17-year-old wonderkid Mbaye assisted 19-year-old Mayulu for PSG’s third. Then, deep into stoppage time, Lee Kang-in sealed the emphatic win with a penalty.
Elsewhere in the Tournament
In Group D action, Brazilian side Botafogo edged out hosts Seattle Sounders 2–1 in a tightly contested match, dealing an early blow to the American club’s hopes of progressing.

PSG’s statement victory sets them up perfectly for the rest of the tournament. With eyes firmly set on the prize, the French giants are now just a few steps away from etching their names in football history as five-time title winners in a single season.
