This isn’t the first time Las Vegas has hosted a World Cup draw, which is intriguing. The city also held the draw for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, which was also held in the US.

This trip back to Las Vegas, 32 years later, makes old fans feel nostalgic while also getting them excited and looking forward to the tournament.

A New Draw Procedure Comes with the Expanded Format

The 2026 World Cup will be the first time the tournament has 48 teams, split into 12 groups of four each. The top two teams from each group and the eight best third-place teams will move on to a 32-team knockout stage.

FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura said, “The new format needs a more complicated draw procedure, and Las Vegas has the technology to make it happen.”

This year’s draw will use AI-assisted grouping technology to reduce the likelihood of very competitive “Groups of Death.” This is different from the 1994 draw. However, this decision has sparked considerable discussion.

Fabio Cannavaro, a former World Cup winner, said, “The decision was wrong because football thrives on unpredictability. Using algorithms too much could take away the game’s old-fashioned charm.”
