European Champions Dismantle Austria Without Conceding

Mikel Oyarzabal was the standout performer and the architect of Spain’s victory. The Real Sociedad forward, who scored the winning goal from the bench in the Euro 2024 final against England, now has four goals at this World Cup, making him the tournament’s most productive Spanish striker.
His first was a sweeping, confident finish; his second, in the 89th minute, converted a Cucurella centre with the same calm authority. He became the first Spain player to score twice in a World Cup knockout match since Emilio Butragueño against Denmark in the Round of 16 in 1986.
After the match, Oyarzabal said: “I’m happy to help the team and get through to the next round. They were a physical side and difficult to play against, but we played a good match.”
De la Fuente Eyes Last 16 With Unbeaten Record Intact
Luis de la Fuente described the performance as almost perfect and called on his squad to maintain their standards, warning that every match is going to be more difficult than the last. Spain’s defensive record, yet to concede a single goal at the tournament, gives them a significant platform heading into the Round of 16.
The only discipline concern from this match was a yellow card for Austria’s Stefan Posch in the 83rd minute, which is now irrelevant given their elimination.
