Mohamed Salah was the decisive figure. He was subdued in a quiet first half, but after the interval he combined with Ziko for Egypt’s go-ahead goal on 67 minutes, his 68th international goal, before delivering the corner that Trezeguet headed in on 82 minutes.

He was given a standing ovation when substituted off in the 85th minute, underlining his standing as the Pharaohs’ leader at this tournament.

Egypt sit top of Group G on four points after two matches, and a draw against Iran in their final group game in Seattle will be enough to secure a top-two finish and a place in the knockout rounds.

New Zealand, with one point from two games, are not yet eliminated, a win over Belgium in their final Group G fixture back in Vancouver gives them a route through, provided results elsewhere cooperate.

All three New Zealand bookings, Singh (20′), McCowatt (34′) and the first-half yellow for Egypt’s Lasheen (17′), stop short of suspension triggers for now, but Bazeley will need a disciplined performance against Belgium to avoid seeing key players ruled out at the crucial moment.
