Scottish Errors Gift Brazil a Commanding Group C Win

Brazil were comfortably the stronger side on paper going in, and the match confirmed it quickly. Vinicius Junior opened the scoring inside seven minutes after Scott McKenna’s costly error allowed the ball to fall into his path, and he calmly rounded Angus Gunn to finish.

Scott McKenna’s hesitation in the seventh minute allowed Brazil to win possession and set up Vinicius Junior’s opener, a moment that set the tone for the match.

A second Vinicius goal was disallowed by VAR for a foul on Hendry at the 25-minute mark, offering Scotland temporary relief, but he headed in from Bruno Guimaraes’s cross just before the whistle to double the lead. Matheus Cunha’s finish in the 60th minute, after Guimaraes overpowered McLean in midfield, ended any remaining Scottish hope.

Vinicius Junior Punishes Every Chance Scotland Gave Him

Vinicius Junior was the decisive figure throughout. He scored in all three of Brazil’s group-stage matches and his brace here put him level with Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe on four goals in the tournament, one behind leader Lionel Messi.

He was at his most dangerous in the first half, having the ball in the net three separate times, VAR cancelling one, and Scotland’s defence had no reliable answer to his directness or his movement inside the penalty area.

Clarke Fears the Worst as Scotland’s Fate Goes to the Table

Steve Clarke was blunt in his assessment after the final whistle: “I think we’re going home,” he admitted, a stark acknowledgement that three points and a goal difference of minus-three may not be sufficient to claim one of the eight best third-place berths across the expanded 48-team tournament.

Scotland have never advanced beyond the group stage in nine World Cup appearances, and this defeat means a 10th exit at the first hurdle is the more likely outcome.

Brazil, meanwhile, advance as Group C winners and will face the runners-up of Group F in the round of 32, with Japan currently occupying that position, though Sweden and the Netherlands can still finish there. Morocco finished second in Group C after beating Haiti 4-2.

Scotland must wait for Sunday’s final group results across the competition before knowing their fate and Clarke acknowledged his side will need to perform at a significantly higher level if they do somehow advance.
