Early Lead Wasted as Wissa Rewrites Congo DR History
Portugal made the ideal start when João Neves headed home a Pedro Neto cross from the left in the sixth minute, a goal confirmed after a VAR check. Martinez’s side, comfortably the stronger outfit on paper, controlled possession and threatened a second through Bruno Fernandes in the opening quarter, but could not extend their lead.
Congo DR, in their first World Cup since appearing as Zaire in 1974, steadily grew into the match. Wissa tested Diogo Costa from distance and Edo Kayembe forced a routine save, before Wissa delivered the decisive blow: meeting Arthur Masuaku’s cross from a short corner to head emphatically into the roof of the net deep into first-half stoppage time.
The second half brought more Portuguese frustration. João Cancelo’s spectacular overhead kick was ruled out by VAR for offside in the build-up, and Cristiano Ronaldo squandered two late opportunities. Wissa’s Header and a VAR Disallowance Define the Match
Neves’ sixth-minute header, confirmed by VAR, gave Portugal an early platform. Wissa’s powerful header from Masuaku’s cross in first-half stoppage time drew Congo DR level and made World Cup history, their first goal in the competition in 32 attempts across their entire tournament history.
Portugal felt they had retaken the lead when Cancelo produced an overhead kick from a Fernandes cross in the 55th minute, but VAR ruled it out for offside, a decision that ultimately preserved Congo DR’s point.
Neves Shines But Cannot Secure the Win
João Neves was Portugal’s standout performer on June 17 and the match’s top-rated player. The 21-year-old opened the scoring with a well-taken header and was a constant threat in midfield throughout.
His goal made him the third-youngest Portuguese scorer at a World Cup. It was a performance that underlined his growing importance to Martinez’s setup, even if it could not ultimately secure the three points.
Ronaldo Drought and Dropped Points Demand Answers
The result leaves Group K unsettled after the opening round of fixtures. Portugal’s failure to convert against a side with considerably less tournament pedigree will concern Martinez, particularly with Cristiano Ronaldo extending his goalless run in major tournaments to 10 consecutive games, his longest such streak. Ronaldo, at 41, started the full 90 minutes and missed two clear openings that could have won the match.
For Congo DR, the point, their first ever at a World Cup, is a significant one. Desabre’s side will next need to manage discipline carefully: Mbemba’s booking in the 32nd minute means Congo DR’s captain is one yellow card from a suspension.
Portugal’s Semedo and Araujo were both booked late on, adding similar pressure ahead of their next Group K fixtures. Both sides will need a result in their second group match if they are to stay on track for the knockout rounds.
