The 2025/26 Saudi Super Cup is set to take place in Hong Kong from August 19 to 23. Hong Kong Football Association President Pui Kwan Kay recently appeared on a radio program, providing key updates on the tournament’s preparations and addressing several pressing topics.

Al Hilal Withdraws, Hong Kong FA Expresses Understanding

Al Hilal, one of the pre-tournament favorites, officially announced its withdrawal from the Saudi Super Cup following its participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. Pui Kwan Kay expressed his understanding of the decision and shared that he travelled to the United States to watch the Club World Cup matches.

He was particularly impressed by Al Hilal’s performance, especially their stunning victory over English Premier League champions Manchester City en route to the quarterfinals, a testament to the strength of Saudi clubs.

Pui Kwan Kay noted that the Club World Cup spanned from the off-season through early July, leaving players with little rest and resulting in significant physical and mental fatigue. “It’s completely understandable if players decide to skip certain matches due to exhaustion,” he stated.

Al Hilal was initially set to participate in the Super Cup, but under Saudi Football Federation (SAFFA) regulations, clubs must ensure a minimum rest period for their players. To comply, the Saudi FA appointed Al-Ahli to replace Al Hilal in the competition.

Pui Kwan Kay emphasized that while every football association has its policies, Hong Kong FA, although lacking a rigid rest-time regulation, also prioritizes player recovery in its event planning.

Will Ronaldo Come to Hong Kong?

One of the biggest questions on fans’ minds is whether Cristiano Ronaldo will come to Hong Kong with Al-Nassr. On this, Pui Kwan Kay offered a firm response: “As long as there’s no major sudden injury, Ronaldo will come. The Saudi FA is also doing its best to make this happen.”

He further stated that Ronaldo places a high value on fan expectations and is committed to exceeding them. “He appears to be very friendly and approachable,” Pui Kwan Kay said.

Saudi Football’s Rise and Hong Kong’s First Time Hosting

Pui Kwan Kay also spoke of Saudi Arabia’s football legacy, highlighting their dominance in the 1980s and 1990s as “Asian powerhouses.” Recently, ties between the Saudi and Hong Kong football associations have grown closer. Hosting the Super Cup in Hong Kong will be a significant step forward in this partnership.

“Saudi Arabia has hosted similar tournaments in Abu Dhabi and London before,” Pui Kwan Kay said. “Now they’ve chosen Hong Kong, a sign of their interest in reaching broader Asian markets.”

He also acknowledged that player injuries and last-minute absences are inevitable risks in any international tournament, but assured that the Saudi FA is committed to bringing their strongest squads.
