Arsenal have officially announced the signing of Spanish international Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, sealing the deal for a reported €65 million (approximately RM323 million). The 26-year-old midfielder will wear the No. 36 shirt for the Gunners and become one of the most significant additions to Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer.

Zubimendi has spent his entire professional career at Real Sociedad, rising through the academy ranks before establishing himself as a vital part of the first team. Since his debut, he has made 236 appearances across all competitions, showcasing a level of consistency and maturity that made him a fan favourite in San Sebastián.

In April 2021, he helped Real Sociedad defeat local rivals Athletic Bilbao to win the long-delayed 2019/20 Copa del Rey title, a moment etched in the club’s history. He also played a crucial role in the 2022/23 La Liga season, helping the Basque club finish fourth and secure a long-awaited return to the UEFA Champions League.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was full of praise for the club’s recruit, describing Zubimendi as a player who fits the team’s identity perfectly.

“Martín has been incredibly consistent over the last few seasons. He reads the game so well, protects the backline, and keeps things ticking in midfield. He’s exactly the type of profile we were looking for, and I’m confident he’ll integrate smoothly into our system,” said Arteta.

Zubimendi himself couldn’t hide his excitement about the move: “Once I decided to leave, I had my eyes set on Arsenal. I’ve followed the team for a while now, and I feel like the way they play suits me. I’m proud to join such a historic club and can’t wait to get started.”

Beyond his domestic success, Zubimendi brings valuable international experience. He played in all five matches for Spain during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021), helping the team secure a silver medal. Since then, he has earned 19 senior caps for Spain, featuring prominently in the squad that won the 2023 UEFA Nations League and reaching the final stages of the 2024 European Championship.

Zubimendi’s arrival sends a strong message about Arsenal’s ambitions heading into the new season. As the Gunners look to build on their recent Premier League title challenges, the Spanish midfielder offers the kind of composure, intelligence, and elite-level experience that could be crucial in their pursuit of silverware both domestically and in Europe.
