Manchester United legend and football pundit Rio Ferdinand has hailed Bruno Fernandes for choosing to stay at Old Trafford despite interest from Saudi clubs, calling the decision a rare show of loyalty in the modern game.

Speaking in an interview with The Mirror, Ferdinand said he has nothing but respect for Fernandes’ commitment to United at a time when many players are tempted by lucrative offers elsewhere.

“Bruno staying at Manchester United, to me, is a clear act of loyalty,” Ferdinand said. “It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot in other professions, but in today’s football world, it’s becoming increasingly rare.”

Reports earlier this summer suggested that Saudi Pro League giants, including Al Hilal, were preparing an eye-watering offer for Fernandes. With salaries often doubling or tripling what top players earn in Europe, many assumed the Portuguese star might be tempted. Yet, Fernandes remained firm in his desire to continue at United.

“I understand that football is a business, and let’s be honest, the money on offer from Saudi clubs is huge,” Ferdinand admitted. “If I were in his shoes, I’d find it hard to turn that kind of deal down. But Bruno chose to stay. That says a lot about who he is.”

Ferdinand believes Fernandes’ decision goes beyond financial incentives. Since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, the midfielder has become a key figure at the club, both statistically and as a leader in the dressing room. His passion, work ethic, and connection with the fans have made him one of the few universally admired figures at Old Trafford during a turbulent era.

“He’s made it clear that he still has unfinished business at this club,” said Ferdinand. “That love for Manchester United, the desire to win something meaningful here—that’s what keeps him going.”

Ferdinand also pointed out that Fernandes’ loyalty likely played a role in Erik ten Hag giving him the captain’s armband. “He’s not just the guy scoring goals and making assists. He’s someone who carries the weight of this club and cares deeply about it. That’s why he’s earned the respect of both the manager and the supporters.”

As Manchester United continues to navigate a challenging rebuilding phase, Ferdinand believes players like Bruno Fernandes are essential for creating a strong foundation.“Bruno staying doesn’t just help the team on the pitch,” he added. “It sends a message: that some players still care about the badge, not just the paycheck. And that’s something every fan can appreciate.”
