In an international friendly on April 1, Portugal secured a 2–0 victory over the United States at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
With key player Cristiano Ronaldo absent, Bruno Fernandes captained the side and played a decisive role. He created multiple attacking opportunities and delivered two crucial assists that directly influenced the outcome.
Portugal lined up with Gonçalo Ramos as the central forward, supported by João Félix and Francisco Trincão in attack. The United States fielded a competitive lineup led by Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, resulting in a physically intense contest.

First Half: Trincão Breaks the Deadlock
The United States started aggressively. In the 2nd minute, McKennie delivered a precise pass that led to a long-range effort from Tillman, which was saved by Portugal goalkeeper José Sá. The U.S. continued to threaten through set pieces and shots from distance but failed to convert.
Portugal gradually took control of possession and began to counterattack effectively. In the 8th minute, Bruno Fernandes tested the goalkeeper with a shot from inside the box.
The breakthrough came in the 37th minute when Fernandes received a through ball near the byline and cleverly backheeled it into the path of Trincão, who calmly finished into the far corner to make it 1–0. It marked Trincão’s third international goal.
Despite continued U.S. efforts, particularly in long-range attempts, the first half ended with Portugal holding a narrow lead.

Second Half: Félix Seals the Victory
After the break, the United States attempted to push forward through midfield build-up, but Portugal’s defensive structure remained solid.
In the 59th minute, Portugal doubled their lead. Bruno Fernandes delivered a corner from the left, and João Félix met it with a superb volley from the edge of the box, sending the ball into the bottom corner. This goal marked Félix’s 12th for the national team and effectively secured the win.
Portugal maintained control through possession, limiting the U.S. to ineffective attacking moves. The American side struggled to create clear chances, with most of their efforts failing to test the goalkeeper.

Squad Depth on Display
In the 85th minute, Portugal introduced Veiga and M. Fernandes, both making their international debuts. Their inclusion reflects the team’s ongoing transition and depth development.
Overall, Portugal demonstrated strong efficiency in attack, combined with disciplined midfield control and defensive stability. The 2–0 victory not only highlighted Bruno Fernandes’ leadership and creativity but also proved that the team remains highly competitive even without their star player.
As international competitions approach, this performance will undoubtedly boost Portugal’s confidence and momentum.
