Despite finishing 15th in the 2024/25 Premier League season, their lowest ever in the Premier League era, Manchester United players remain united behind head coach Rúben Amorim.

Amorim took over the team in November 2023, stepping in from Sporting CP to replace former manager Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed due to poor performance. Upon arrival, Amorim immediately began implementing tactical reforms, promoting young talents, and introducing a more aggressive high-pressing system.

However, due to factors such as taking charge mid-season, a lack of squad depth, and frequent injuries, Amorim managed only 7 wins in 27 league matches.

At the same time, Manchester United made a strong run in the Europa League and reached the final but suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, missing out on the title. The loss added more pressure and led to external criticism of Amorim’s coaching effectiveness.

Ugarte: We’re All Eager to Get Going This Season

Midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who reunited with Amorim from Sporting, has insisted that the Brazilian has his trust despite the setbacks in an interview with Sky Sports.

“We are all very motivated because we believe and trust the manager,” Ugarte said. “His ideas are clear, and he’s very analytical about executing every detail. Despite last year’s results not being optimal, the organization and how we train have improved.”

Ugarte also emphasized having patience. “When you change managers, change the way you play, and bring players in, it’s a transitional period. The burden of playing for Man United is huge, and we all know that.”

Amorim Continues Youth-Focused Approach

Amorim trained several young stars at Sporting, including Pedro Gonçalves and Nuno Mendes, and built a disciplined and technically sound midfield unit. He has brought the same way of thinking to Old Trafford. Ethan Williams, an 18-year-old center back, and Kobbie Mainoo, a 19-year-old midfielder, were both given consistent playing opportunities.

Preseason in the U.S. Begins

Currently, Manchester United is in the US for its preseason tour. The team will play Bournemouth and Everton before going back home to play Fiorentina from Serie A at Old Trafford. Amorim said this tour will assess players’ fitness and teamwork, especially those returning from injury.

The schedule indicates that United will begin their Premier League season on August 17 against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The first game will be a significant test for Amorim in his “second season” as coach. A good performance could boost morale and increase faith in Amorim’s project.

Although there is a lot of pressure on the players, their words indicate that United is progressing toward stability and long-term rebuilding. Amorim continues to receive significant support from his team.
